Commerce has always been a trust system. Customers rarely have perfect information. They cannot fully validate quality before purchase, and they cannot perfectly predict whether a business will stand behind a promise. So they rely on signals: reputation, consistency, policies, guarantees, and the experience of other people.

The intelligence age does not remove this reality. It relocates it. In Salesforce research, 39% of consumers reported using AI for product discovery, with adoption even higher among Gen Z. A 2024 meta-analysis on online reviews and purchase intention found that review-related factors significantly affect purchase intention, with review valence showing a particularly strong effect. People trust what other people say, especially when the signal is consistent.

In the intelligence age, community provides a second anchor: AI can propose, community can verify. AI can broaden the search space, community can narrow it to what is credible. Buying behavior increasingly flows through micro-communities - local, professional, and interest-based - where trust is earned through continuity and reputation, not ads.

In August 2024, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced a final rule banning fake reviews and testimonials, explicitly noting AI-generated fake reviews as an example. The corresponding Federal Register rule text details prohibitions on creating, selling, and buying fake or false reviews and related deceptive practices.

Counterfeit trust does more than mislead customers. It degrades the entire market. When customers cannot rely on the review layer, they become skeptical of everyone, including honest providers. Trust collapses into cynicism, and then the only remaining differentiator is price.

Transparency Is No Longer Optional; It Is the Baseline

When AI influences what customers see, it becomes part of market governance. Ranking, recommendations, and summarization do not just inform decisions; they shape them.

That is why transparency and explainability are not enterprise checkboxes. They are trust fundamentals. In practice, customers need to understand when AI is operating, what it is optimizing for, and how to challenge or correct outcomes when they do not align with reality. Trust is built when systems show their work clearly enough that people can sense fairness.

Privacy Becomes Infrastructure, Not Policy

Trust does not survive if customers believe the system is learning from them in ways they never consented to. As AI expands, data becomes the substrate of intelligence, but also the substrate of distrust when boundaries are unclear.
